Dr. Yuki Tanaka โ€” PhD Marine Biology, Kyoto University

Dr. Yuki Tanaka is a marine biologist specialising in coral reef fish ecology, cephalopod cognition, and the conservation biology of marine megafauna including manta rays and sea turtles. He completed his PhD at Kyoto University's Seto Marine Biological Laboratory in 2010 and has since conducted fieldwork across the coral triangle โ€” Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands โ€” as well as in Japan's temperate coastal waters. Dr. Tanaka has collaborated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the IUCN's Marine and Polar Programme, and the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security. His published research spans reef fish community ecology, octopus tool use and cognition, and the impacts of ocean warming on marine biodiversity. Marine Lab was founded in 2023 to bring rigorous marine biology science journalism to a global audience.
